Åsa Kalmér & Jörgen Hjerdt - Scars

Abecita Art Museum - Closed until 25 February 2021, Borås

Åsa became ill with breast cancer for the second time in the winter of 2017. During the summer, after a spring with heavy treatments; chemotherapy, radiation and tablets, she wanted to investigate how the attitude towards her body has changed since she had surgery to remove her left breast.

Based on their knowledge and experience, they chose a photographic expression to explore the image and perception of the scar. Åsa and Jörgen were inspired by, among others, Cindy Sherman and Robert Mapplethorpe and the exploration of different kinds of beauty and intimacy but with integrity.

In the exhibition "ERR" the question is asked whether it is possible to liberate the "new single-breasted body"? Is there a forward-looking potential in this "new body" that shows the sensual, the erotic and the androgynous - concepts that offer more perspectives on the scarred body than the "victim or cancer patient" that we so often see? Is there humor in the new body?
