When the Textile Museum is closed, the exhibition We Knit for Peace moves to the city. In a total of 6 shop windows around Borås city center, knitted works with messages of peace are displayed. A corona safe walk in the fresh air to experience culture!

The exhibition is shown in 6 shop windows at the following addresses in Borås:

  • Hötorget 4
  • Torggatan 25 (two windows)
  • Västerlånggatan 26 (window facing Torggatan)
  • Stora Brogatan 12
  • Österlånggatan 43.

In the autumn, the Textile Museum, in collaboration with Cirkus Cirkör, Borås Stadsteater and Hemslöjdskonsulenterna VGR, organized a call where the public was invited to knit for peace. The call is inspired by Knitting Peace - A performance by Cirkus Cirkör about striving, peace and knitting. The performance will be staged in collaboration with Borås Stadsteater next year as a tribute to the handicraft and textile city of Borås.

The Textile Museum received a total of 116 worksfrom all over the country as well as Spain, USA, Argentina, UK and Ireland. All entries are now presented in the outdoor exhibition We Knit for Peace in collaboration with Borås City, as well as in a digital catalog.

Around the world, people are committed to creating a better world with craftsmanship as a method. It can be about peace, non-violence, equality, inclusion or anti-consumerism. This peaceful way of protesting and expressing one's views through craftsmanship is a grassroots movement called Craftivism, something that inspired Circus Circus and the show Knitting Peace.

Due to the current pandemic, the Textile Museum is closed. But the museum still wanted to carry out the exhibition in some form, says museum director Ulrika Kullenberg:

“We really wanted to carry out the exhibition and discussed various possibilities. We judged that the most important thing is not that the exhibition is shown inside the Textile Museum, but to carry out our mission toenrich the lives of Borås and all visitors with culture. That is why we are very happy about the collaboration with Borås City. Their participation enables us to show the exhibition in a safe way for both visitors, staff and the knitted works on display. ”

“When we received the question from the Textile Museum about enabling the exhibition together with the property owners, we immediately saw the potential in the project. Bringing culture into the public sphere in new ways is something we want to work on more long-term and it is just in time. We are incredibly happy to be able to invite the people of Borås to a new opportunity to visit that spreads hope and warmth. ” says Mikaela Persson, project manager at Borås City.
